July 10, 2022 Keep God front and center

PRAYER:  “Moses said to the people:  ‘If only you would heed the voice of the Lord, your God’…..”  This start to our first reading from Deuteronomy calls to me.  How often I forget to ‘heed the voice of the Lord’…. How about you?... All around us people are ignoring the Lord, our good God.  We need to “ return to the Lord, (our) God, with all (our) heart and all (our) soul.”!!

The Responsorial Psalm chimes in:  “Turn to the Lord in you need, and you will  live.”

And the scholar of the law and Jesus agree that to inherit eternal life  “You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your being, with all your strength, and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself.”  As Bishop McDonnell used to to say… Christianity is simple:  “Love God and love neighbor”.

PARISH MAINTENANCE:   Good news on the church boiler…. Jim Reidy of B-G Mechanical has found a used, intact, replacement section of the part of our boiler that is rusted.  We should be able to repair our existing church boiler for around $20 thousand instead of $120 thousand replacement.

PARISH ONGOING MISSION/EVANGELIZATION/GROWTH:  The Parish Council has been grappling with the tough realities of our Holy Name of Jesus Parish situation:  Mass Attendance still down compared to pre-Covid, Past monies due to the Diocese and still unable to pay our Diocesan bills, Repairs needed to Assumption Church and Rectory.  But there is a grit and determination here of the people of Holy Name of Jesus Parish.  Where will we be in 5 years?.... Where could we be in 5 years?..... We have some good things going including a parent-involved youth faith formation program and a start on a middle-school ministry.  Let’s keep praying that we stay close to God as we discern our way forward?

Peace of Christ,

Deacon David Southworth, Parish Manager
